Third Grade Reading Classes
There are four different reading classes. Everyone of them require your child reading library books on a regular basis. I keep up with their Accelerated Reading Test scores to make sure the students are selecting books that are just right reading for them, that they are reading the books before testing, and that they are comprehending what they read. I encourage students to choose books that they enjoy to read instead of choosing for the level or points.
Our school is piloting a program in third grade using Common Core Standards. These are standards adopted by most states in the U.S. that are the same from state to state. We will be giving practice tests to students throughout the year that will not count against them or our school. We will be taking the TCAP test in April that will be covering the current Tennessee State Standards. Therefore, I will be teaching from Common Core Coach Books as well as The Scott Foresman Reading Books. The standards are interrelated. Your child will not be issued a reading book to take home, but will have access to one at school. Also, your child will be given reading homework from time to time for practicing skills we have used at school.
Your child has a Reading Notebook section in her/his binder. I will give the mini lesson handouts of lessons we have covered for reference and review to your child to put in the notebook. Please do not remove these from the notebook.
